Your name can be a hindrance to you.

People answer names depending on their family, origin, god, environment, tribe, region, nation, religion or the people they adore. The name you answer can be a hindrance to your destiny. Most people answer names they don’t know their meaning. Even when they know they think it has no effect on them. That was exactly what happened to Moses.

Moses was born in Egypt when the children of Israel were suppressed and killed. Moses’ sister Miriam with the consent of the mother made bulrushes for him and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank. By peradventure, Pharaoh’s daughter saw him, adopted him and named him Moses (Exodus 2:10), meaning, saved or drawn out of water, and from that day water became a hindrance to Moses. Let me show you.

* The river Moses was drawn out from was where the Egyptians worship and sacrifice to the goddess of the river (marine goddess). So, it was only the daughters of Pharaoh that were allowed to bathe there. Simply speaking, Pharaoh’s daughter was childless and thought the goddess provided a baby from the Hebrews for her. The name Moses fully means, a child gotten from the goddess of the river.

* When God told Moses to cause plagues on the Egyptians, the first plague was the waters of Egypt (Exodus 7:19). The same water he was drawn out from.

* After they left Egypt, the next thing Moses confronted was water, the Red Sea. The Red Sea became a hindrance (Exodus 14:21).

* After the deliverance from the Red sea, he confronted the waters of Marah, for they were bitter (Exodus 15:23).

* When the children of Israel murmured against Moses because of water, ready to stone him, he cried to God (Exodus 17:6).

* Due to anger Moses struck the rock twice to produce water against the instruction of God to strike the rock once (Numbers 20:11).

* The disobedience of Moses by striking the rock twice to produce water denied Moses from entering the promised land even when he pleaded with God (Deuteronomy 3:25 – 26).

No matter how anointed you are, no matter how prayerful you may be, if you don’t fight foundational powers they can hinder your destiny.

Psalm 11:3 says, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”.

It was not coincidence when God changed Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah, Jacob to Israel. It was certainly no coincidence when the angel told Mary the name to be given to His son – Jesus.

There is power in a name. That is why when you say, in the name of Jesus Christ, demons begin to tremble, every knee bows and every tongue will begin to confess that Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2:10).

What is your name and in what name do you believe?

Wonderful insight. I love how you brought a deeper understanding of the life of Moses. You are correct about names, when I was pregnant with my daughter I wanted to give her a name that would bless her. So I named her Jessica from the root name Jesse meaning gift from God, then Rei, my Japanese name meaning my thankfulness and my prosperity. So I call her my thankful gift from God who will prosper. Thanks for this post.

Thanks for posting. You are very correct – Jabez, Abram, Dorcas, Jacob -their names affected them negatively until they changed it (I’m not sure whether Dorcas changed her own).

Wow! What’s in a name. This post is so expository and profound. Just as stated above, I’ve done this theme of ‘NAMES’ before but not with this scriptural references. I really like your perspectives using the word of God. Indeed, names and their meanings are very important towards one’s lifestyle and attitude. We believe in my culture that our names play a vital role in the outcome of our lives and it has proven to be absolutely correct. This was a great share. Thanks. 🙂

I know I did a post earlier in 2011 called “What is in a Name”, however, after reading Evangelist Chilavert’s post, it adds some more insight on the same subject matter. I think it’s worth the read. Enjoy!
